Hoping to draw on the group experience here. There are three glaze combos I really like when they turn out just right, but I can't figure out how to get that 'just right' consistently. I understand some variables are uncontrollable, but I'm hoping there are some application tips and tricks I can.
The combos are:
Amber crackle over zerg. I like it best when it has a lot of purple and a lot of opaque light blue and variation, less when it comes out mostly a dark translucent purple-y brown.
Archon Blue over thermal yellow - trying to get that clear bright green, but sometimes there are blue cloudy areas and more yellow bits.
Gloss black over alarak red. What I'm aiming for is a dark red covered in a lot of little black dots, very like the test tile, with a smooth surface texture. I've gotten lots of variations from this combo.
Anyone have thoughts? Have good luck getting these results consistently?
I don't work with those combos, so can't give an opinion on them specifically but here's my opinion on getting things just right!
The shape of your vessel matters. The test tiles are a specific shape and some glazes will move and pool and settle differently on on different shaped objects.
The fullness of the bucket and general thickness matters. The studio checks the glazes on Tuesdays (I think) but you can also get to know a glaze and tell for yourself if it's a little thicker. Also how long you dip and how long you wait between dips impacts thickness of each glaze.
When I am trying to figure out a glaze combos I take serious notes on dip time and dry time. Maybe try a few simple cups and glaze them adjusting those variables to see what gets you what you are looking for.
I love glazing!
