Summer Kids Clay Program 2025

Welcome to our summer kids program page!  We've been running this program since 2012 and it's been a perennial success.  Many of our young staff and even teachers started their journey in ceramics with this program.  We pack as much clay as we can into one week.

This program is a wonderful opportunity for kids with an interest in clay to exercise their creativity, improve their fine motor skills and make some friends.

Program Breakdown

Schedule

Each week of the program runs Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm.

Group size and teachers

12 kids are enrolled each week and instructed by a lead teacher, one to two counselors and often a counselor in training (CIT).

Lessons and activities

The kids get to enjoy an even split of hand building and wheel throwing lessons.  The wheel is what they're often most excited about, but at this age, it's the hand building projects that showcase their creativity, ability to solve problems, and understanding of clay.

Some of the favorite hand building projects every year are creature sculptures, gnome homes, bird houses, luminaries, and planters.  When the kids are throwing, the wheel often chooses the pot shape for them :)

Throughout the week, kids will be presented with many projects, mini games, puzzles and tasks.  We always do some tie-dye mid week, and use Friday to glaze the week's creations.

The pots

The kids use our Bmix 5 clay all week.  It's a mid range, white stoneware.  Their underglazed pots are given a coat of clear and fired to cone 6 which means that everything comes out food, dishwasher and microwave safe.  Shabam.

The Nature of the Program

Indigo Fire, and specifically our summer kid's program, promotes a non-judgmental, friendly environment for children to learn, make mistakes, have fun and meet new friends.

This summer program is most successful when every child has a previously demonstrated interest in art and clay. It's all about clay all day, so in registering your child we will ask that you describe their experience with clay.

Our staff and teachers work hard to make sure every child in the program has a fun, productive week.  â€‹As awesome as clay is, it's not for every kid.  If this is the case, and they're negatively affecting the experience of other kids, we will ask parents to pick them up from the program.  These scenarios, though unfortunate, are not grounds for a refund.
