Guest Policy

Students may bring one free 'helper' guest per month to the studio. This guest may assist the student who hosted them with their pottery e.g. helping carve, decorate or glaze a pot. They may not use the wheels or clay on their own.

Guest Day Pass, $25

This option allows guests to work on their own project alongside a student.  A Day Pass comes with 2lbs of clay, and then the guest may use their host's clay allotment.  Students are fully responsible for guests they host.

Limitations:

- Guests must be hosted by an active Indigo Fire student.

- Students may not host more than two guests with Day Passes in a day.

- Guests may use one Day Pass a month.

- A Day Pass lasts until the end of the day.

There is no set limit on how many non-participating visitors that students may bring to see the studio and just hangout for a bit.  Please be respectful and make sure not to disrupt other students.

Firing Fees

Bisque Refire (or 'Waxcident'): $5

Glaze Refire: $10

Oversize Pot: $5 - $40

Greenware pots that are larger than 10" in any direction (including diagonal) require an oversize pot fee.  The fee is calculated as...

Height x Width x Length (in inches) x .04 = Oversize Fee (in dollars)

Notes: A calculated fee below $5 becomes $5.  A calculated fee above $40 becomes $40.  Pots shorter than 2" should be calculated using 2" as the height.  Pots over 15" in any direction are not allowed and will not be fired.

To pay the firing fee, find a staff member to ring you up at the front desk.

Studio Conduct

Cleaning Etiquette

All materials, boards, surfaces, tools and equipment must be completely cleaned after use.   This includes the floor around your wheel.  The next person who goes to use any of these items should not be able to tell what type of clay was last used.  If you value the pottery studio, one of the best ways to show appreciation is to clean your tools/equipment and then a little extra.  You might be the one running out of the studio in a rush one day and someone else may cover some of your mess!

Inappropriate Behavior

Indigo Fire teachers and staff may excuse any studio member or participant in a workshop, private lesson, or class from the studio if they damage studio property, are acting unsafely, disrespect another individual in the studio, refuse to adhere to studio rules, or behave in any other way that warrants a dismissal.  Individuals dismissed in this manner are not entitled to a refund.

Safety

There are safety hazards in a ceramics studio that students must be aware of and act accordingly.

Dust: all ceramic dust is dangerous to breathe in as it can ultimately lead to silicosis.  This is a long term danger, and most relevant for folks that spend a lot of time in the studio like our staff and teachers.  The best defense against dust inhalation is consistent, wet cleaning of tools, equipment and studio space.

Metals: Certain clays and glazes contain heavy metals that are harmful to ingest in sufficient quantities and over time.  Students should be mindful not to bite their nails in the studio or eat food that has potentially been contaminated.

Equipment and tools: Wheels, slab rollers, and extruders can all lead to injury if used improperly.  Students should never be near the pugmill or use staff-only equipment.  There are many sharp pottery tools that should be handled carefully.

General hazards: students should use common sense to be aware of general hazards like wet floors or sharp glaze shards.

*Note* Information shown on the website is considered accurate and trumps conflicting information in the Comprehensive Student Policy Guide.  Updating this document is a significant effort and is not done every year.  It remains useful though as it is full of details that would bore most readers on the website :)

When We Make Mistakes

Damaged or lost pots

Workshops, Private Lessons and Events -

If a pot from a workshop, private lesson, or event is lost, damaged or poorly glazed we will compensate them in a way that the situation warrants.  Most often, this comes in the form of credit towards a future activity.  Pottery is an imperfect process and sometimes defects arise that are out of our control.

Semester Class Students and Independent Study Members -

Lost, broken, cracked and misfired pots are bound to happen at a community studio.  Our staff is as careful as possible when handling pottery, but there will always be mistakes.  Students are always welcome to remake pot casualties without recording new clay.  We understand that the time and effort invested in a pot is what cannot be returned, and the true cost of an accident.

We ask that students be understanding of these mishaps when they do happen and hopefully appreciate the large effort our staff puts in to safely fire and handle hundreds of pots every week.  If you're wondering whether we feel bad about your broken pot - YES!  Delivering the news to a student that their pot is damaged or was misfired is one of the toughest parts of working at a studio.  It doesn't get easier, and we appreciate your mercy.

Absent Teacher

Very rarely, an Indigo Fire teacher misses a workshop, class, private lesson, or event due to a scheduling mistake or personal emergency.  The attendees of that event will be refunded and issued a credit to take a future workshop/private lesson at half of the registration fee.
